An ''instant city'' has been created at Ramstein Air Base Germany for Afghan evacuees who are headed to the United States for permanent relocation. More instant cities have been created at other military locations.

Americans must remember what happened on this date 20 years ago and rededicate themselves to defending the idea of America, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said at a Pentagon ceremony honoring those killed in the terror attack on the Pentagon.

Two decades ago, Air Force Lt. Gen. Marc H. Sasseville, now the vice chief of the National Guard Bureau, was a lieutenant colonel with the D.C. Air National Guard. When aircraft hit the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon, the nation went on alert — and so did he.

Survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon shared their recollections during webinars with college students and Department of Defense Education Activity high school students.

A number of organizations and individuals laid wreaths at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, including Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks. She also spoke with some of the survivors of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III recognized the vital contribution of Arabian Gulf allies, saying their aid enabled the evacuation of 124,000 people from Afghanistan.
